Reasons for orthodontic treatment (braces) adults & children:
Specific to children:
How Braces Work?
The Dentist accomplishes this by attaching mechanical device or appliance like Braces , to the teeth to gently push them in the desired direction. When a tooth is subjected to pressure from one side, its root presses against the underlying alveolar bone. Eventually, this force causes a portion of the bone next to the root to dissolve, allowing the tooth to move in the direction it is being pushed. The arrangement of the wires can be customized to apply different pressures to individual teeth. Sometimes elastic bands or springs are attached to the arch wire to boost the directional push. As the tooth migrates, new bone builds up in the space vacated on the other side of the root. This prevents the tooth from moving back into its original position.
Treatment does not end with brace removal. Most Dentist will suggest that you consistently wear a retainer for the first few months. The retainer is also worn during bedtime.
Is it necessary to remove teeth for Braces Treatment?
Dentist generally try to avoid extraction, but if there is severe crowding, removal of one or more teeth might be necessary to make room for the others to move into the proper position. Some reasons for extraction include:
Types of braces:
1. Metal Braces- most common, Less expensive type, Most noticeable
2. Ceramic Braces- tooth-colored or clear brackets, More expensive than metal braces; Brackets can stain easily if patients don’t care for them well.
3. Lingual Braces- brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth. Invisible from outside, Difficult to clean; more expensive; not appropriate for severe cases; can be more uncomfortable.
4. Invisalign- Almost invisible; Patients can eat and drink whatever they want, Will not work for serious dental problems; only available for adults and teens, not children; more expensive option; can be easily lost and costly to replace; treatment may potentially take longer.
Time required for Braces Treatment
Most orthodontic treatment takes a period of one and a half year to operate. Nevertheless, it might take up to two years or even more dependent on the patient and the dental condition. Adults stay longer while wearing braces compared to children ,Adult teeth do not grow into another set; hence they are firmer than milk teeth. For them to be in their correct position, they will require more time and pressure, unlike baby teeth. As a result, adults can wear braces for up to three years.
It is possible to shorten the treatment process if Patients adhere to all treatment instructions given by Dentist, proper oral hygiene practices and eating a healthy diet also helps a lot and should avoid hard foods like nuts, maize, chewing gum, popcorn, and sugary foods.
